PODpartner's HTV: Materials, Pricing & Production Tips

HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl) is now officially live on PODpartner, bringing a new range of tactile possibilities to your product lineup. From soft velvet to sparkling glitter finishes, HTV delivers a physical dimension and visual impact that standard printing can't replicate, making your custom apparel stand out starting from the very first touch.

This guide provides everything you need to master this new process—covering the visual traits of our 6 specialty materials, our advanced production integration, and clear instructions on pricing and design specs to help you build standout, high-margin products with ease.

6 Special Effects to Wow Customers

Glitter

Featuring a bold, chunky glitter texture, this material is designed for maximum visibility. It’s incredibly durable and mess-free, meaning you get all the sparkle without the annoying flaking. It maintains high-intensity brightness even on the darkest fabrics.

Best For: Holiday limited editions, party wear, or standout graphics for fashion-forward audiences who want to be noticed.

Velvet

Velvet features a very fine, short pile that provides a soft texture. When touched, you can feel a slight friction from the delicate fibers, offering a warm and comfortable sensory experience. We support this material with a thickness of up to 0.6mm, giving the design a raised effect that adds to its tactile quality.

Best For: High-end fashion collections, boutique-style hoodies, or any apparel aiming for a luxurious, tactile experience.

Glow

Glow materials appear as vibrant colors in daylight but transform into a luminous glow in the dark. It recharges easily under any light source—natural or artificial—making it perfect for creating designs that "pop" in the dark.

Best For: EDM festival themes, night-running clothes, or edgy streetwear brands looking for high social media shareability and "wow" factor.

Metallic

Metallic features a fluid chrome-like gloss that is soft and even, simulating a finely polished metal surface. It maintains a sophisticated satin sheen that looks incredibly expensive and high-tech. Our Metallic HTV supports a thickness of up to 0.6mm, creating a sharp, high-relief look that commands attention.

Best For: Futuristic or cyberpunk designs, and athletic brands looking to project power and a tech-heavy, premium aesthetic.

Sparkle

Unlike the boldness of Glitter, Sparkle offers a more subtle, sophisticated shimmer. The fine glitter particles catch the light elegantly without being overwhelming, providing a smooth, embedded finish that feels refined. Our Sparkle HTV supports a thickness of up to 0.6mm, adding a bold 3D dimension that makes your shimmering designs literally stand out from the fabric.

Best For: Minimalist branding accents or premium hoodie where you want to add detail and "light" without being too loud.

Premium Matte

A smooth, non-shiny finish with a soft silicone touch. It sits perfectly on top of the fabric with 100% opaque coverage, offering a clean and modern aesthetic that looks much sharper than traditional ink.

Best For: Modern minimalist branding or as a high-quality alternative to standard prints for essential brand staples like chest logos or sleeve tags.

Usage Scenarios: When to Use HTV?

HTV shines brightest when used for specific, high-impact details. Because the material is cut from solid film, it provides a level of crispness and texture that ink simply can't achieve. Here are the best ways to utilize it:

  1. Minimalist Branding & Logos Small placements are where HTV is most cost-effective. A small Sparkle logo on the chest, a Velvet brand mark on the sleeve, or a Premium Matte icon on the back neck adds a high-end, "retail-ready" feel for a very low cost.
  2. Bold Typography & Slogans If your brand relies on text, HTV is a game-changer. It creates sharp, clean edges that make slogans pop. Use Glow for nightlife-themed quotes or Velvet for elegant, script-style lettering to give your words a physical dimension.
  3. Sports-Style Personalization HTV is the industry standard for jerseys. You can use it to add professional-grade Numbers and names to the back of hoodies or tees. The thickness of the material gives it that authentic athletic look that feels much more durable and premium than standard printing.
  4. High-Contrast Accents Sometimes a design just needs one "wow" factor. You can keep your main graphic in DTG and use a single HTV element—like a Sparkle star or a Glitter accent—to draw the eye and make the entire garment feel more expensive.

The PODpartner Edge: More Than Just HTV

While other Print-on-Demand platforms limit you to standard ink and thread, PODpartner is the first and only POD platform to bring professional Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) to the on-demand market. This gives you a massive competitive advantage, allowing you to offer high-end finishes that your competitors simply cannot access.

The "Hybrid Process": A Combination You Won't Find Anywhere Else

We are the industry pioneers in cross-process customization. While other POD suppliers force you to choose one single method—limiting you to just DTG, or just Embroidery—we’ve broken that barrier. We are the first to support 'Hybrid' creativity at scale. You can now combine the premium, raised texture of Embroidery, the infinite color gradients of DTG, and the specialized effects of HTV all on a single product. This allows you to build multi-layered pieces that look like boutique designer wear, not standard merch.

Blazing Production Speed: Zero Trade-off for Complexity

Usually, "complex" means "slow." In the past, coordinating multiple production lines (moving a garment from a printer to an embroidery machine and then to a heat press) would take days. Thanks to our advanced production infrastructure, we’ve solved this. For a Single Process product, your lead time remains the same. For a Hybrid Process product, we require only one additional day to complete high-quality, mixed-media production. You get elite complexity with the speed your customers expect.

Maximum Design Freedom: Mix 5 Materials in One Garment Part

We give you the freedom to be as creative as you want. You can add up to 5 independent HTV design elements on a garment part (like the front of a shirt). This means you can mix different textures—like a Sparkle logo paired with Velvet text—to create a look that is truly one-of-a-kind.

Pricing & Value: Low Cost, High Margin

Our HTV pricing is designed to be transparent and scale with your design size. We use a Bounding Box logic, meaning you only pay for the total area (Width × Height) your design occupies.

1. Price Breakdown by Material

The base price covers any design up to 20 in². If your design exceeds this area, a small fee is added for every extra square inch.

Material type Base price (Up to 20 in²) Extra area fee (Per additional in²)
Glitter From USD1.19 From USD0.02
Velvet From USD1.30 From USD0.02
Glow From USD1.25 From USD0.02
Metallic From USD1.22 From USD0.02
Sparkle From USD1.25 From USD0.02
Premium Matte From USD1.26 From USD0.02

2. How the "Bounding Box" Works

  • Simple Calculation: If your logo is 4" wide and 5" high, your area is 20 in², which falls under the $1.19 base price (for Glitter).
  • Separate Charging: Each independent HTV element you add to a garment is calculated and charged separately based on its own bounding box.
  • Cost Efficiency: This system is highly cost-effective for small placements like sleeve logos, chest branding, or hem tags.

Tech Tips: Avoid Common Design Errors

To ensure your designs are production-ready and look exactly as you envisioned, please follow these technical requirements. Because HTV involves physically cutting film, the "what you see is what you get" rule works a bit differently here.

1. File Formats: SVG vs. PNG

  • SVG (Recommended): Since HTV requires precise cutting lines, vector files (SVG) are the gold standard. They provide the sharpest edges and allow our machines to follow the paths of your design perfectly.
  • PNG (High Res): If you use a PNG, it must have a transparent background. Any non-transparent pixels will be interpreted as part of the design, which could result in an unwanted "box" or "patch" look around your artwork.

2. The "Solid Color" Rule

This is the most common point of confusion: HTV ignores the colors in your original file. Because we are cutting your design out of a pre-colored physical film (like a roll of Gold Glitter or Red Velvet), your original image colors will be completely replaced by the material you select in our design tool. For example, if you upload a blue logo but choose "Gold Glitter" material, the final result will be solid Gold Glitter.

3. Lines and Thickness

Since the film needs to be "weeded" (removing the excess material by hand), extremely thin lines or tiny dots may not adhere well or could peel off.

  • Minimum Line Thickness: Maintain a stroke of at least 0.08" (2mm).
  • Negative Space: Ensure gaps between design elements are at least 0.08" (2mm) to prevent them from merging during the heat-press process.

4. No Gradients or Glows

HTV cannot recreate gradients, shadows, or semi-transparent "faded" edges. Your design should consist of solid shapes with clean, closed paths. If your design relies on color fades, we recommend using our DTG process for those specific elements and reserving HTV for the tactile accents.

Wrapping Up

The addition of HTV gives you a toolset that simply isn't available on other POD platforms. Whether it’s the tactile feel of Velvet or the sharp shine of Glitter, you now have a direct way to make your products look and feel more premium than the competition.

The new materials are live in the design tool now. We recommend ordering a few samples to see the textures for yourself and start testing these high-end finishes with your audience.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the main difference between HTV and standard DTG printing?
A: The main difference is texture and material. DTG (Direct-to-Garment) sprays ink into the fabric for a soft, breathable finish, which is ideal for photos and gradients. HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl) involves cutting a design from a solid, pre-colored film (like Metallic, Matte, or Glitter) and heat-pressing it onto the garment. This creates a raised, crisp, and tactile 3D effect that standard ink cannot achieve.

Q: Can I combine HTV with other printing methods on the same garment?
A: Yes. PODpartner is the first POD platform to offer a true "Hybrid Process." You can combine HTV accents (e.g., a Metallic logo) with a DTG background graphic, or even mix HTV with Embroidery. This allows for multi-layered, high-end streetwear designs that look custom-manufactured rather than printed on demand.

Q: Why does my design change color when I select an HTV material?
A: HTV works differently than ink. Because we cut your design from a specific roll of material (like Gold Metallic or Red Velvet), the system ignores the colors in your uploaded image file. Your entire design will take on the single, solid color and texture of the material you select in the design tool.

Q: Is there a minimum order quantity (MOQ) for HTV custom apparel?
A: No. We operate on a true Print-on-Demand model with no minimums. You can order a single hoodie with a custom Velvet or Glow-in-the-Dark design. Pricing is calculated based on the size of your design (Bounding Box), starting from as low as $1.19 for small logos.

Q: How should I wash garments with HTV designs?
A: To maintain the crisp edges and texture of materials like Velvet or Glitter, we recommend washing the garment inside out with cold water and air drying (or tumble dry low). Do not iron directly over the HTV design, as the high heat can damage the texture.

Q: What file format should I use for HTV?
A: Vector files (SVG) are highly recommended because they provide the precise cutting paths needed for the machine. If you use a PNG, it must have a transparent background and high resolution (300 DPI) to ensure clean edges.
