Most quality t-shirts land somewhere between 180 and 240 GSM. That is the useful answer, and it is where you should start if you are picking a weight for a brand.

It is also incomplete, in two ways. Two shirts can both be 240 GSM and feel nothing alike. And the labels attached to these numbers, "midweight", "heavyweight", "premium", mean whatever the person selling the shirt wants them to mean.

Below is the full chart from 100 to 440 GSM with ounce conversions, what each band actually feels like, and where each one sits on a retail price tag.

1. What GSM actually measures

GSM stands for grams per square metre. Cut one square metre of the fabric, weigh it, and that is the number. A 180 GSM cotton jersey means one square metre of it weighs 180 grams.

If you are shopping in the US, you will more often see ounces per square yard. The conversion is straightforward: one oz/yd² is roughly 33.9 GSM. So a 6.0 oz shirt is about 203 GSM, and a 4.5 oz shirt is about 153 GSM. Both units are in the chart below, because suppliers switch between them without warning and comparing quotes in mixed units is how brands end up ordering the wrong fabric.

Opacity is included because it is the single most common complaint on lighter weights and almost nobody puts it in a chart. So is the retail band, because weight is a business decision before it is a comfort decision.

Read the bands, not the exact figures. The difference between 180 and 190 GSM is not something a customer will feel. The difference between 150 and 240 is something they notice before the shirt is fully on.

3. Why two shirts at the same GSM feel completely different

Start with a problem in the vocabulary. Look up what counts as a heavyweight t-shirt and you will find one guide starting the category at 180 GSM, another at 185, another at 200, another insisting nothing under 220 qualifies. The same word covers a forty-gram spread, and which definition you get depends on what the person publishing it happens to sell.

That should tell you something about how much weight the number is being asked to carry. It has become a marketing input as much as a technical one. And even where the figure is honest, it is describing an output rather than a recipe.

There is more than one way to reach 240 grams per square metre, and the route changes the result in your hand. Three variables decide it, and none of them appear in the GSM figure.

Yarn

Finer yarn spun to a higher count produces a smoother, denser, more closely knitted surface at any given weight. Coarser yarn takes up more volume for the same mass, so it produces a bulkier, rougher fabric at exactly the same GSM. Two 240 GSM shirts, one knitted from fine combed cotton and one from a coarse open-end yarn, do not read as the same product. One looks refined. The other looks like a blank.

Knit structure

Single jersey, pique and interlock behave differently at identical weights. Single jersey is flattest and drapes most readily. Pique traps air in its texture, so it reads thicker than its weight suggests. Interlock is denser and more dimensionally stable, which is why a 200 GSM interlock can feel more substantial than a 220 GSM single jersey.

Finishing

What happens after knitting changes the hand feel and changes the number itself. Compacting, the standard stabilisation step for jersey, uses steam and mechanical force to push stretched knit loops back into a tighter grid. It raises measured GSM and it is what stops side seams twisting toward the front after the first wash. Mercerising swells the fibre to a rounder cross-section, which adds lustre, dye uptake and dimensional stability. Enzyme washing softens the surface.

The practical consequence: a fabric that has not been properly compacted reports a lower GSM on the spec sheet and then shrinks toward it in the customer's laundry. Two shirts quoted at the same weight can behave completely differently on first wash depending on how well that step was executed. Finishing also decides what the surface will accept. Heavily softened or over-finished faces change how decoration bonds to the fabric, which is one of the quieter causes of the problems in prints cracking and fading after washing.

So when a supplier answers "what weight is it?" and stops, you have a third of what you need. The three follow-up questions are what yarn the fabric is knitted from, what knit structure it uses, and what finishing it has been through. 4. Is 200 GSM good for a t-shirt?

200 GSM, or about 5.9 oz, is the most searched weight in the category and for good reason. It is opaque across every colour, it holds its shape without feeling stiff, and it wears comfortably across three seasons. It also sits exactly on the line where a shirt stops reading as a basic and starts reading as a considered product.

Whether it is good quality is a different question, and 200 GSM does not answer it. A 200 GSM shirt knitted from fine combed cotton, properly compacted, is a genuinely good shirt. A 200 GSM shirt from coarse yarn with minimal finishing is a cheap shirt that happens to weigh the same. Identical number, different product.

One thing 200 GSM does settle: it is the floor for heavy decoration. Dense embroidery and raised print sit badly on lighter fabric, which puckers and distorts around the stitch or the ink. If your artwork involves anything with weight to it, 200 GSM is where you start rather than where you stop.

5. What 440 GSM actually means

440 GSM comes up often enough to be worth answering directly, and the honest answer has two halves.

Ultra-heavyweight tees at this level do exist. There are 430 GSM shirts on the market, roughly 12.7 oz, cut from 100% cotton, and they are a real if very small category. As the market has moved heavier, the top of the range has stretched with it: what read as extreme a few years ago is now the upper end of a recognised premium tier, and some brands push into 300 to 400 GSM specifically for the near-jacket structure it gives.

The other half is that most of the time the number is in the wrong conversation. 440 GSM is a very common specification for fleece and sweat fabric, and it gets lifted from those spec sheets into t-shirt copy. If a supplier quotes 440 GSM for a standard tee, the useful question is not whether it is good, it is what fabric construction produces it. A genuine 440 GSM knit tee is an unusual and expensive thing. A 440 GSM figure attached to an ordinary tee at an ordinary price is usually a number that wandered in from somewhere else.

6. Which weight your brand should launch with

Most guides answer this by season. Lighter in summer, heavier in winter. Fine advice for a wardrobe, poor advice for a brand, because it ignores the number that actually constrains you: your retail price.

Work backwards from what you intend to charge.

  • Selling at $20 to $30. 150 to 180 GSM. At this price the customer is buying the graphic and the brand. A heavier blank eats margin without moving the sale.
  • Selling at $40 to $75. 200 to 240 GSM. This is where the garment itself has to justify the price. A customer paying $50 picks the shirt up, and a thin blank at that price reads as a markup they did not agree to.
  • Selling above $80. 250 to 280 GSM. At this level the fabric is a large part of what you are selling, and the weight has to be obvious in the hand within a second of contact.

Here is why this matters more than it looks. Moving a spec from around 180 GSM to around 260 GSM costs a couple of dollars per unit at the factory. The retail band it unlocks is twenty to forty dollars higher. There is no other single line in a garment spec with that ratio, which is why weight is a pricing decision wearing the costume of a comfort decision.

Weight also decides which silhouettes are available to you. A boxy, wide, drop-shoulder cut needs enough fabric body to hold its shape and collapses into something shapeless below roughly 200 GSM. One practical note. Committing to a single weight across a whole launch is a guess about your customers made before you have any. Producing a small number of pieces across two weights and letting real orders decide is cheaper than a bulk commitment to the wrong one.

What is a good GSM for a t-shirt?

For most brands, 180 to 240 GSM. Below 180 the shirt reads as lightweight and can show through in pale colours. Above 240 it becomes a specific stylistic choice rather than a default. Within that band, yarn and finishing matter more than the exact figure.

Is higher GSM always better quality?

No. GSM measures weight only. A heavy shirt from coarse yarn with poor finishing feels worse than a lighter shirt from fine combed cotton. Weight tells you what category of garment you are holding and nothing about how well it was made.

Is 190 GSM good quality?

190 GSM is a solid standard mid-weight, opaque in most colours and comfortable across three seasons. It is a defensible default for a general catalogue. As with every other weight, whether the shirt is good depends on the yarn and the finishing rather than the number.

What GSM is best for summer?

140 to 180 GSM. Lighter fabric is more breathable and dries faster in heat. Below about 140 the trade-off is opacity, which is the most common complaint on very light shirts, particularly in white.

Is 240 GSM thick?

Yes, by t-shirt standards. 240 GSM is fully opaque, holds a shoulder line, and most people would call it thick. It sits at the upper end of what still wears comfortably in mild weather. Heavier options at 280 GSM and above trade comfort for structure.

What is the difference between 180 GSM and 200 GSM?

Roughly a 10% weight increase: noticeable side by side, easy to miss in isolation. 200 GSM holds its shape marginally better through wash cycles and handles heavier decoration more reliably. Yarn and finishing will make a bigger difference to the finished garment than those 20 grams.

Is 150 GSM too thin for a t-shirt?

Not for its purpose. 150 GSM is a legitimate lightweight summer tee and plenty of brands sell it well. It is too thin if your customer is paying premium prices, or if you need full opacity in white and pale colours.

How do I convert GSM to oz?

Divide GSM by 33.9. A 180 GSM shirt is about 5.3 oz per square yard, 240 GSM is about 7.1 oz, and a 6.0 oz shirt is about 203 GSM. Suppliers move between the units without flagging it, so convert before comparing quotes.

Does GSM change after washing?

Measured GSM can rise as the fabric compacts, particularly if it was not thoroughly stabilised before cutting. The garment gets smaller while the fibre content stays the same, so weight per square metre increases. This is why the finishing process matters more than the figure on the original spec sheet.
